Watauga Lake has the highest elevation of any lake in the TVA system at 1959 feet above sea level at full pond. The lake covers 6,430 acres (over 10 square miles) with 105 miles of shoreline, 80% of which are in the Cherokee National Forest and much of it inaccessible except by mountaineering or by boat. The Appalachian Trail traverses the Watauga Dam, which is 331 feet tall, 925 feet long and over 1200 feet thick.
